AppRiver launches web protection service SecureSurf

CBR Staff Writer Published 02 February 2011

Uses both DNS and proxy technology; blocks social media sites selectively

AppRiver has announced its web protection service SecureSurf which uses both DNS and proxy technology.

The Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider said SecureSurf enables enterprises to establish detailed web surfing policies, monitor web activity and create whitelists for reliable websites.

For social media sites, the service blocks only the elements that violate a company's policy.

The company said SecureSurf has a continuously updated list of websites known to distribute malware or viruses, or that contain pornography and other objectionable content.

AppRiver chief technology officer Joel Smith said SecureSurf does not inhibit Web surfing and provides a comprehensive DNS lookup plus proxy approach to Web filtering.

Websites that are suspicious are directed to a proxy server, which then conducts a quick and detailed analysis.

Smith said, "The DNS lookup eliminates the known bad sites, such as those that provide inappropriate content or deliver viruses, while the proxy further evaluates sites that might violate a company's policy."
